ORSKA
To the Rhythm of Hammers and Chisels

The rhythm of work in the workshops of the Kathmandu Valley has been marked by the steady tapping of hammers for centuries. Between heaven and earth, Newar masters perfect the art of repoussé. Blow by blow, millimetre by millimetre, they raise intricate ornaments from thin sheets of metal, then chase them from the front, deepening the lines and refining even the smallest details (read more about repoussé in the Crafts of the World section). These hand-decorated elements travelled from Nepal to our jewellery workshop, where we transformed them into earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings and brooches. The result is jewellery that brings together Anna Orska’s imagination and the knowledge of people who spend their entire lives learning their craft.

THE LANGUAGE OF ORNAMENT

The surfaces of the jewellery are entwined with vines and lotus leaves. These botanical tendrils symbolise growth, the continuity of life and the bond between people and nature. Rising from the mud towards the light, the lotus tells a story of transformation and openness to a new direction. Every artisan preserves the meaning of the decorations while leaving their own mark on a language of ornament developed over generations. Variations in the force of each blow, the angle of the tool and the movement of the hand mean that no two patterns are identical. Today, this uniqueness is a luxury and a mark of authenticity, testifying to the artisan’s skill.

STONES THAT CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE

Traditional ornaments are adorned with natural labradorite, a stone that changes with the viewing angle. Dark and rugged at first glance, it reveals flashes of blue, green and gold as it moves. The light emerges only at the right angle, much like a familiar place revisited years later can reveal an entirely new story.

The collection is complemented by a limited series of 60 unique necklaces featuring crystals from the Himalayas. Their sharp facets evoke rocky peaks, while their natural inclusions resemble clouds suspended inside the stone. Each setting was handcrafted for its individual crystal, following its proportions, cuts and natural shape. The design was adapted to the stone, not the other way around.

THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT

Jewellery from the Nepal collection is bold, sculptural and rich in detail. It tells a story of the courage it takes to move beyond familiar solutions and of encounters that change our perspective. The Himalayan peaks remind us that above the clouds there are no well-trodden paths – only those we dare to forge.
