Repusated notes from the Kathmandu Valley - Nepal jewelry collection

Above the clouds there are no beaten paths. There are only those we dare to chart. This is an invitation not to repeat others' answers, but to seek our own: to try, to wander, and to change perspective; accompanied Anna Orska when she returned to Kathmandu after 10 years. The new collection was created between the designer's imagination and the experience of Nepalese artisans. The hand-repoussed metal bears the marks of thousands of hammer blows, which, millimeter by millimeter, shape the traditional ornament over many hours. Minimal differences in pressure and hand gesture mean that no two designs are identical. A lotus, rising from the mud towards the light, symbolically signifies openness to new directions. Raw rock crystals evoke the Himalayan horizon: their facets are like rocky peaks, and their inclusions are like clouds captured in stone. Clear as mountain air, they symbolize the clarity of mind found where altitude restores things to their proper proportions.

Round gold-plated earrings from the Nepal collection

This asymmetrical pair of earrings is crafted from gold-plated brass. The entire surface of the round discs is covered with plant ornaments. Drawn from Himalayan and Hindu Buddhism, they symbolize the continuity of life, development and growth, the connection between humanity and nature, and the endless cycle of rebirth. One earring in the pair is covered with smaller plant shoots, while the other features slightly larger floral ornaments in the form of vines and plumes. Jewelers from the ORSKA studio complemented the entire composition with labradorites, placed at different heights in each earring. The edges of the earrings are finished with fine embellishments, and the pair fastens with comfortable gold-plated silver studs.

What is the repoussé technique?

Repusé is a traditional technique in which thin sheet metal is shaped from the bottom using hammers and punches, creating a convex relief. This element is then chiseled, which involves working from the front, deepening the lines, refining the details, and giving the ornament its final character. In the Kathmandu Valley, this art has been developed for centuries by the Newars, famous for their masterful metalworking. Patterns passed down from generation to generation are not merely decorative, but a vehicle for memory – each artisan preserves the inherited language of ornament and leaves their own mark on it. Although the world around them has changed, Nepalese workshops continue to work almost exactly as they did centuries ago. The value of this work is determined by time, precision, and the unique gesture of the human hand. To learn more, we encourage you to visit the Crafts of the World tab.
